About Me
Born in Love Street,Paisley,Scotland. Moved to Vancouver at the age of 3. The only musical memories are 'Happy days are here again'(a lager advert tune!) and seeing the beatles playing on the telly. Was taken back to UK after 6 years. First 'proper' song that I ever liked so much that I hummed it was by Manfred Mann, but soon after I heard Jimi Hendrix for the first time.To me, all music that I had heard before this was but a pale imitation of this, the real thing. I was so excited! Soon after I was fortunate enough to see Hawkwind playing live in the street near a street market my parents wanted to visit (in London).I persuaded them (parents!) to let me stay and watch while they went shopping. I still love the music of both Hendrix and Hawkwind to this day. Hawkwind got me into electronic music and going to free festivals.I discovered loads of amazing bands going to these and enjoyed doing it immensely.Sadly, the law now prohibits free festivals. I think this is an absolute disgrace!I still do festivals and my favourite for some years now is Knochengorroch in Scotland.I have discovered so many brilliant bands by going to this festival that I am now prepared to go even if I haven't heard of any of the bands on the lineup. Its a long way to go(300miles),but well worth it. The crowd are great too.It has a really nice vibe to it. Hawkfest is also very good for the same reasons.
Alan Stivell was an early musical influence for me.I saw his 'Celtic Orchestra' on the TV. Think fiddle sections, harp sections bagpipe sections etc. Some similarity with 'classical' orchestras, but with the musicians playing traditional celtic instruments instead. It was a wonderful sound and this got me into the world of celtic music (for which I will be forever grateful). It also occurs to me that I have neglected to mention the huge influence of radio. As a kid I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg,Radio Caroline etc under the bedclothes at extremely low volume. On Radio 1 I discovered the wonderful John Peel(RIP).I stayed with John Peel until the final show.I cannot thank this amazing individual enough. He introduced me to so much new and original music. I didn't like it all,but it was just refreshing to hear music that didn't (yet) live in the mainstream. He also came across as a very warm and funny person. I miss him. Guess I should mention clapping. People ask me why I do it.There is no reason. Its just a reaction to music that I like.I clap to music when its 1)dark enough 2)the music is good enough,and3)I've had enough to drink. All these ingredients help (because I'm very shy)and a shortage of one of the ingredients can be offset by an increase in the others. Thanks to bands who kept me waiting for a long time for encores and so led me to clapping complementary rhythms to the dull plod plod of traditional encore clapping. Thanks to the lovely Sonia for introducing me to flamenco clapping. I guess that's about it.If any of you see me at a festival say hello ! If at all interested in seeing what music I like, try Willspace! www.myspace.com/will358 I enjoyed this gig!
